DEF & SCR Systems

To comply with these strict NOx limits, modern diesel vehicles and equipment use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, which inject Diesel Emission Fluid (DEF) into the exhaust to convert NOx into harmless nitrogen and water.

However, DEF must be kept in liquid form to function effectively. DEF freezes at around -11°C (12°F), but issues can start at temperatures as low as -6°C to -8°C due to crystallisation. This is why DEF heaters are crucial in preventing freezing and ensuring continuous NOx reduction.
